In a post-cataclysmic world, the murder of a small-town bank teller forces a guilt-ridden FBI Agent to draw a local Sheriff into her eccentric approach to solving the crime before the culprit can strike again.
The year is 2032, five years after a catastrophic geomagnetic storm devastates the earth’s magnetic field, destroying technology as we know it. As the Federal government rebuilds the nation’s infrastructure, FBI Agent Kate Hugo is assigned to a special task force to protect Arizona’s new non-digital banking system. During a small-town robbery, the teller is murdered.
How do you solve a murder with no internet, no cell phones, no fingerprint databases? Enter Kate Hugo, whose eccentric methods of solving crime are central to the story. (A story inspired by a true crime solved by Kate Warne, America’s first female Pinkerton Agent.)
Kate arrives to investigate but sparks fly when the local Sheriff inserts himself into the investigation. Can these two broken characters overcome their distrust of each other? What secrets do the residents of Arivaca, Arizona hide? Is the teller communicating from the dead to identify his killer? Or will Kate’s unconventional approach to solving crime force the culprit’s confession?
